There are conflicting opinions about willpower in the online business realms. Some say that it’s necessary. That it’s a prerequisite for everything that you do.
Others say that it’s unreliable and that you should optimize your life and business so that you don’t need willpower to succeed.
In reality, a mix of both is likely true.
Willpower is finite and often domain specific. For example, I don’t have trouble getting into the gym every day but I also can’t stop myself from eating cookies until they are all gone. But after a long day or if I’m sick from eating too many cookies, I am less likely to get into the gym.
This is where the most common alternative to willpower comes into play:
If I don’t keep any cookies in the house, I won’t ever be tempted to eat them. Some people go as far as to unplug their TV or uninstall social media apps from their phones so that they have a significant resistance to overcome before they can slide into old habits.
But there is another aspect of willpower that many ignore. Willpower has a source.
Most people acknowledge decision fatigue but take for granted the fact taht willpower and energy replenish with every new day.
This isn’t a given.
In yesterday’s email I mentioned that I would be taking a few weeks off of coffee to reset and replenish myself.
Today is day 1 and it’s taking all the willpower in the world to get through the day.
I’m confident that if I were to have a cup of coffee, I would get my energy back and feel motivated to work.
Your energy comes from the way you treat your body. It comes from your health, both physical and mental.
If you don’t get enough sleep, your decision making and reaction time will suffer.
If you don’t eat well, you’ll feel tired and experience brain fog.
And the list goes on and on.
Environment gimmick may help you avoid cookies or TV, but you’ll never be able to gimmick yourself to success.
Success takes willpower.
Willpower takes energy.
Energy comes from health.
If you want to do better at everything you do in life, focus on your health first.
